Concrete staining in Yukon
Yukon, known as the Czech Capital of Oklahoma, sits on Route 66 just north of I-40 and had 23,630 residents at the 2020 census. Its population doubled from 8,411 in 1970 to 17,112 in 1980 after Oklahoma City annexed nearly all the land around it, and Canadian County averages 15 days a year above 100°F, more than Oklahoma County's 13.
Yukon calls itself the Czech Capital of Oklahoma, and it sits on Route 66 just north of I-40 in Canadian County. Its population doubled in one decade, from 8,411 in 1970 to 17,112 in 1980, after Oklahoma City annexed nearly all the land around it. Those years left Yukon with a large stock of 1970s and 1980s subdivisions. Newer subdivisions have since gone up on the city’s edges, and a small older core remains around Main Street, the Yukon’s Best flour mill and Czech Hall. The 2020 census counted 23,630 residents.
A patio or driveway from the annexation boom has had forty-odd summers on it. Most of the original concrete is still structurally fine. The surface is what looks worn: faded, with old sealer peeling in patches and stains from leaves and rust. Restaining a driveway of that age starts with stripping off what is left of any old coating so the new colour goes on evenly. Then it is sealed.
The houses on the newer edges of town are the opposite case. Their garage floors and back patios are often plain grey and have never been coloured, so a first stain goes onto clean concrete. Staining a new patio is simplest before furniture, planters and grills have marked it up.
Canadian County averages 15 days a year above 100°F, compared with 13 in Oklahoma County and 10 in Cleveland County, and about 75 days above 90°F. It gets sunshine 68% of the time, and its average wind speed of 11 mph is the highest of the three. The open prairie on the west side of the metro gives little shade or shelter.
A stained colour sits in the concrete and holds up well, but the sealer on top breaks down under UV and heat, and that is what makes colour on a west-facing slab look washed out. A UV-stable sealer costs more and lasts longer in this sun. Resealing on a regular schedule keeps the colour from going flat.
If a driveway or curb cut is replaced before it is stained, Yukon needs a Curb Cut / Driveway Permit from Development Services, (405) 354-6676. The City’s application lists the residential fee as $75, needs a site plan showing the house, fences and new drive, and must be approved before work starts. An inspection has to be called in at least 24 hours before the pour, once the forms are set. A drive that opens onto a state highway, such as SH-4 (Garth Brooks Boulevard) or SH-92, also needs an ODOT driveway permit. No permit was found for staining an existing slab.
Mustang is the next town south in Canadian County, and Bethany lies to the east along Route 66.
